August 30: Dear diary, had a wonderful cruise...enjoy some impressions! Liebes Tagebuch, hatte eine tolle Reise..einige Eindruecke!

Taking the ferry from Rafina, the ship passes (and stops over)  several islands on its way to Myconos.
Paros, Naxos, Santorini....
One could stay for a while on all islands...but we wanted o go to Myconos! :)

This is Paros:

On our way to Myconos... Auf der Fahrt nach Myconos

and into the harbour! quite busy there!!! und in den Hafen...einiges an Verkehr dort!!

Myconos is famous all over the world. No need for information...you can easily find a lot on the web.
But there are also some interesting facts  and unusual information one would not find on first glance!
It is always quite ( or very very..) windy on the islands in the aegean sea...and that's why:
During the older ages (17th to 19th century) the windmills on the island would grain the local wheats and thus provide the ships with rusks! The rusks were made traditionally of barley. There were so well-known, that there is still today a measure-unit from these rusks, called "Mostra"! 1 rusk = 1mostra!
Most ships would make a stop on Myconos during their long journeys and buy long-lasting food for the sailors.
Later....much later.....Onasis loved the island....and made it popular among the rich and the famous...

the rusks are nowadays served with Feta-cheese, some tomato, oil, and herbs! It is a delicious  summer meal!

................................
And ..the story of "Peter", the pelican!
In 1958, the bird was injured and fell into the sea near Myconos.
It is seldom that such a bird leaves its flock..but it seems it had to! It was found by fishermen who cared for it...and it didn't want to leave the harbour having become the "mascot" of Myconos. It died of natural course in 1986.
Jacky Kennedy then brought the second pelican soon after "Peter", it was a female bird, called "Eirini" which means peace!
Hamburg's zoo brought a new "Peter", too, that made two already!
Some years later yet another pelican joined the "gang"...and it was named "Nicolas"! Seems to be a good life there, as "maskot"!!! Thus the pelican remains the well-known symbol of Myconos!

..............................................................
Except from discos, paradise beaches, all-night parties, ..., exentric visitors and thousands of tourists...there is traditional Greek life on the island ,too!
The most traditional and beautiful occasions to get a little glimpse on how Greeks like to celebrate,  are the church-festivals, devoted to various saints and Mary, the Godmother, of course! As there are many saints...there are many feasts!:) And there are many Name-days of the saints in summer!:)
Some are quite special , like the one i found written about on a Greek blog from Myconos!
In July there is a n orthodox church festival  on the "goat-island" east of Myconos, 25 minutes by boat through the blue seas...this is something not many tourist get to see...if any !
There is a little church on the un-inhabited island, which is devoted to  "Maria, the Lady of the goat-island"! Shephards must have built  the church many years ago.
There are beautiful pictures on this blog , describing the whole day on the island about this year's celebration...
...even if you don't understand the language ..there is a whole picture-story one very seldom sees!
Reading through the post i found out...it is only men taking part in this festival....old traditions still very much alive in 2012 ....! ( i suppose the men on the pictures and in the little videos would be quite surprised and flattered if they knew...how "famous" they are becoming now! :)
I have contacted the writer via email to get his permission to post some of the pictures here, but there is no answer yet...thus i just post the link!

..............
and yes..i saw dolphins!
und ja, ich habe auch Delphine gesehen!

Many Greetings to all! could have stayed there much longer....but am too curious about my worldtrip to continue!!!  :)
